Low loss GaN waveguides at the visible spectral wavelengths for integrated photonics applications.
We perform comprehensive studies on the fundamental loss mechanisms in III-nitride waveguides in the visible spectral region. Theoretical analysis shows that free carrier loss dominates for GaN under low photon power injection. When optical power increases, the two photon absorption loss becomes important and eventually dominates when photon energy above half-bandgap of GaN. When the dimensions...
متن کاملIntegrated TiO2 resonators for visible photonics.
We demonstrate waveguide-coupled titanium dioxide (TiO(2) racetrack resonators with loaded quality factors of 2.2×10(4) for the visible wavelengths. The structures were fabricated in sputtered TiO(2) thin films on oxidized silicon substrates using standard top-down nanofabrication techniques, and passively probed in transmission measurements using a tunable red laser.
متن کاملPrecise Measurement of Lunar Spectral Irradiance at Visible Wavelengths
We report a measurement of lunar spectral irradiance with an uncertainty below 1 % from 420 nm to 1000 nm. This measurement uncertainty meets the stability requirement for many climate data records derived from satellite images, including those for vegetation, aerosols, and snow and ice albedo. It therefore opens the possibility of using the Moon as a calibration standard to bridge gaps in sate...
متن کاملAlGaN/AlN integrated photonics platform for the ultraviolet and visible spectral range.
We analyze a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) platform comprised of a crystalline AlxGa1-xN optical guiding layer on an AlN substrate for the ultraviolet to visible (UV-vis) wavelength range. An Al composition of x~0.65 provides a refractive index difference of ~0.1 between AlxGa1-xN and AlN, and a small lattice mismatch (< 1%) that minimizes crystal...
متن کاملLow-loss multilayered metamaterial exhibiting a negative index of refraction at visible wavelengths.
We experimentally demonstrate a low-loss multilayered metamaterial exhibiting a double-negative refractive index in the visible spectral range. To this end, we exploit a second-order magnetic resonance of the so-called fishnet structure. The low-loss nature of the employed magnetic resonance, together with the effect of the interacting adjacent layers, results in a figure of merit as high as 3....
